Director’s Statement
Created with an all-female cast and crew, “Ambrosia” lives out our childhood fantasies. When Mackenzie Llewellyn—co-producer and costume designer—and I were younger we played out imaginative tea parties with our prized stuffed animals. As the oldest sister, I orchestrated the madness, while Mackenzie riffled through our closets to ensure everyone looked grand. Our cousin Pippa joined in, taking photographs to develop in our camp’s darkroom. Now we’re in our early twenties, but not much has changed. In fact, our make-believe proved prescient. I now write, direct and star in films; Mackenzie designs and creates gowns; Pippa writes, directs and takes brilliant photographs.
“Ambrosia” breathes life into the tea parties of our childhood with the resources and skills acquired in adulthood. We worked with Missy White, an experienced animal handler and horse rescuer, and Equine Animal Rescue to ensure that the animals featured were comfortable, cared for, and safe onset.
"Ambrosia" pays homage to our childhood dreams to become writers, directors, actresses, designers, photographers. It confirms that the answer to “What do you want to be when you grow up?” has not changed much in twenty years. These grown-up girls want to bring their perspective to the film and fashion industries.
During the isolating pandemic, “Ambrosia” reminded us that we are never alone when equipped with our imaginations and sisterly relationships, and that we must continue to pursue our childhood dreams.
